Handheld Gaming Enthusiast & Product Reviewer

Former game developer based in San Francisco. I've owned and daily-driven 6 different handheld consoles since 2020. I test every recommendation in this database personally before publishing.

Why this site exists

When the original Steam Deck launched in 2022, the internet was full of review videos shot after one week of use. The real questions — how does the dock work six months in? Does the SD card slow down? How does emulation hold up after firmware updates? — weren't being answered.

HandheldPicks started as a personal spreadsheet tracking every device, dock, SD card, and accessory I'd bought. Eventually it became something worth publishing.

How we evaluate products

Every recommendation on this site comes from:

  • Personal testing — I own and use everything I recommend. Most products are tested for at least 3 months before being reviewed.
  • Reddit sentiment analysis — r/SteamDeck, r/ROGAlly, r/SBCGaming, and related communities. I read and aggregate community feedback, not just cherry-picked comments.
  • Amazon rating data — Cross-referenced with verified purchase reviews to filter astroturfing.
  • Technical sources — Digital Foundry, The Verge, GamersNexus, and hardware-focused YouTube channels for specs verification.

Affiliate disclosure

HandheldPicks participates in the Amazon Associates program. When you purchase through links on this site, we earn a small commission at no extra cost to you. This is how the site stays funded and free of ads.

Affiliate relationships do not influence recommendations. Every product recommendation on this site is something I personally own and have tested. I turn down affiliate programs for products I wouldn't recommend.

Content update policy

Every product page has a "Last updated" date. I revisit and update content when firmware updates, price changes, or new information materially affects the recommendation. Old reviews don't get silently left to rot.
